The strategically significant country of India is the largest country in the Indian subcontinent. Although India is in the top gear towards development it still does not have a viable public transport system. This is the reason why travelers seek to rent their own cars. Train networks do exist but they do no branch out to cover the places one would normally want to see. Taking the bus will make your leisure trip into a nightmare so that is totally out of the question. As mentioned above India is a rapidly developing economy hence there are some areas where it has done well to set up a decent infrastructure. One such sector is the tourism industry. Renting out a car is the least of your problems in India. The bigger problem is being able to make your way through the traffic on the streets. Cars are driven on the left hand side of the road, well at least officially they are. Generally you will find people to zip their car from wherever the find space. Ignorance of the law is a common feature in India.

You will need a local or an international driving license in order to legally drive on the streets. But then again if you aren’t used to driving your car in a jungle you really wouldn’t want to drive in India. With narrow roads dotted with potholes and open manholes this driving around just might be your biggest adventure.

India does have some good roads which are the national highways but even they are pretty narrow. Driving discipline in India is non-existent. Recent years have seen the Indian government taking quick measures to develop some of the most important roads in the country. New road networks are also being built in all around the country.

Although the construction is geared towards the future development of the country it only adds to the driver’s plight at the moment. Hence foreigners would be better of hiring a driver with the car. You will have to make use of a car that’s for sure because there is no other means of transport as such but it would be much wiser to hire a driver as well.
